Level 5 Therapeutic Counselling

Empower yourself and others with a career in Therapeutic Counselling
The course approach

Theoretical Approach

The BTEC Level 5 Professional Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling course is an integrative course and encompasses elements and theories from the rich tapestry that is the psychology and therapy world.

We start off by building a strong Person Centred foundation before weaving in elements of Psychodynamic, Gestalt, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Transactional Analysis.

A direct entry course

Entry Requirements

You will be taken on a journey of self discovery that will be deeply healing, raw and challenging on a soul level whilst equipping you for the realities of working in the counselling and psychotherapy profession.

Therefore, you will need to have a good level of self awareness, open mindedness and resilience to undertake this training.

This is a direct entry course, therefore you do not need to have studied the lower level counselling qualifications.

All learners must be aged 21 and over and will be assessed individually to determine their suitability to undertake foundation degree level learning and their ability to undergo the personal, transformative nature of the course.

Demonstrating your knowledge

Assessment

Assessment will take the form of written assignments, group & individual presentations, practical demonstrations of your counselling skills, journaling and creative projects.

It is important to us that our assessments suit all learner styles and being a therapist is not about assignment writing however, it is about how you apply your academic knowledge to your client work and your humanness.

There are no exams.

Building your experience & confidence

Counselling Placement

To successfully complete the course you will need to complete 100 hours of counselling practice with clients over two years.

There are a variety of counselling providers across the country that you may be able to secure suitable placements with and we will always guide you with where to find them and what kind of clients they work with.

We may be able to provide you with a counselling placement within our own counselling service at Supporting Minds.

Supporting you

Counselling Supervision

It is a requirement that all counsellors and therefore student counsellors have regular supervision when working with clients. This ensures your safety, the client’s safety and aids to develop your skills and knowledge.

Supervision will be at the ratio of 1 hour of supervision, for every 8 client hours or 1 1/2 hours a calendar month, whichever comes first. This is a BACP ethical requirement.

Learn more about yourself

Personal Therapy

Due to the heavy emphasis of personal development on this course, we have a mandatory 15 hours of personal therapy as an intrinsic part of this course.

We believe that we have to become comfortable with sitting in our own darkness, before we can sit in the darkness of others. It also provides you with the opportunity to find out more about yourself, uncover the ‘real’ you. This is something that is invaluable and will support the heavy emphasis on self reflection throughout the course.

Supporting Minds will support you in finding a suitable counsellor if need be. The cost of counselling starts from £35 an hour.
