Student Placement

Find out more about our student counselling placements
We recognise and value the impact that our student counsellors have

Why have a placement with Supporting Minds?

We are an established counselling organisation that understands the needs of clients. We are also a training provider and therefore know the requirements that you need to meet to successfully complete your counselling placements.

Your contribution to our organisation and the communities we offer affordable therapy to is very much appreciated.

In return for your passion and commitment we can offer you:

  • A full and comprehensive induction of Supporting Minds policies and procedures including GDPR, adult and child safeguarding (certificates awarded) and virtual counselling training
  • In house 1:1 supervision at a discounted rate (availability permitting)
  • A supportive working environment
  • Processing your enhanced DBS which you can use in other organisations too (there is a cost associated with this)
  • The possibility of paid work on qualification

Due to the nature of mental health provision in the UK we are a medium to high risk service and therefore it is essential that you have all the support in place to work safely and ethically within our counselling service.

How to apply for a student counsellor placement at Supporting Minds

Apply for a Placement

You will need to have the following in place before you can start seeing clients at Supporting Minds.

Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee a placement to all students that apply, therefore you may choose to wait until we have confirmed we can offer you a placement before putting in place all of the other requirements below.

  • Provide one professional reference (not from your tutors)
  • Student membership of either the BACP or the NCS
  • Student counsellors insurance
  • Clinical Readiness Certificate
  • A supervisor that understands Supporting Minds values and mission. We will need details of your supervisor before you can commence placement
  • Have an enhanced DBS, we can process this for you (if you are a student of SM we will automatically complete an adult and child DBS)

Please note that we are only able to offer our own students placements at this time. External student applications will not be considered.

What happens next

Once we have received your application we will be in touch within 2-3 weeks to advise you if we're able to offer you a placement.

If we're not able to offer you a placement at this time we will keep your information on file.

Reasons we may not be able to offer you a placement at this time include:

  • Your availability doesn't match our requirements right now
  • We don't have the clients to suit your needs (ie we only have child clients and you require adults)
  • We have a new intake of our own students that are about to start placement
  • We don't have the room space for face to face appointments

The latest guidance from the BACP for virtual student placements

BACP Requirements for Virtual Placements

The BACP have issued some new guidance to training organisations and student counsellors on continuing with virtual placements post pandemic.

The BACP recognise that clients and organisations will be continuing to offer virtual couselling appointments as well as returning to face to face provision.

Your core training must include training on working remotely with clients and your college must confirm to the BACP that you have completed a mixture of online and face to face counselling sessions. Please check with your training provider that you can undertake a virtual placement before completing the application form.

If your course requires 100 hours of supervised placement hours, at least 51 hours must be conducted face to face (ie in the room).

Guidance for our own students

Supporting Minds Students

f you are studying with Supporting Minds we will always try to offer you a placement. Please note that you will still need to follow the application process detailed above.

To meet the BACP virtual placement requirements we will offer you training, as part of your studies, on working virtually with clients and confirm with the BACP that this has been completed.

To enhance your experience and employability options post qualification we will always encourage you to seek placements outside of Supporting Minds too but this is not mandatory.

To start a placement with Supporting Minds or any other counselling provider our students must have successfully completed Unit 2 and Unit 6 assignments, have been issued their Fitness to Practice certificate in addition to having the essentials in place ie insurance, professional body membership etc.
